Privacy Policy for KoShield
Effective Date: 30/dec/2025
Thank you for using KoShield. Your privacy and security are our top priorities. This Privacy Policy explains what information KoShield handles and why, ensuring you have full transparency and control over your data.
Our core principle is simple: Your data is yours. KoShield is designed to perform its functions entirely on your device, without sending your personal or browsing data to our servers.
1. What Information the Extension Processes
To provide its content filtering features, KoShield needs to interact with the web pages you visit. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what happens:
- Web Page Content (Processed Locally):
- Image Analysis: The extension's primary feature is to analyze images on the web pages you view. This analysis is performed entirely on your computer using built-in, on-device Artificial Intelligence (AI) models (TensorFlow.js). Image data, or any information derived from it, is never sent to our servers or any third party.
- URL Filtering: The extension checks the URL of each website you visit against the personal whitelist and blacklist you configure in the settings. This check also happens locally on your device.
- User Configuration and Settings:
- All your personalized settings—such as your URL whitelist/blacklist, filtering sensitivity, and other preferences—are saved using the chrome.storage API. This data is stored locally on your computer and is not accessible to us.
- Domain Name Lookups (via DNS-over-HTTPS):
- KoShield includes an optional security feature to check if a website's domain is on a known blocklist (e.g., for malware or adult content). To do this, it sends the website's hostname (e.g., example.com, but not the full URL path) to a DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) provider of your choice.
- By default, this provider is Cloudflare. This is the only instance where browsing-related data is sent to a third party, and it is done to enhance your protection. We do not see or log this traffic. You can change the DoH provider or disable this feature entirely in the extension's settings.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
We want to be absolutely clear about what we don't do:
- We do not collect, store, or transmit any Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
- We do not track your browsing history.
- We do not sell or share any user data with third parties for marketing or any other purpose.
- We have no servers that receive or store your personal data.
3. How We Use Information
The limited information the extension accesses is used exclusively to:
- Provide Core Functionality: To scan and filter images and to enforce your URL whitelist/blacklist rules.
- Persist Your Settings: To save your preferences for a consistent experience across browsing sessions.
- Enhance Security: To perform optional domain checks via the DoH service you have configured.
4. Third-Party Services
- TensorFlow.js: The AI models for image analysis run on Google's TensorFlow.js library. This library is included directly within the extension package and runs locally. It does not send any data to Google or any other service.
- DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) Provider: As mentioned, the extension uses a DoH provider (defaulting to Cloudflare) for optional domain checking. You can review their privacy policy here: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.
5. Security
We take security seriously. The extension is built with the following safeguards:
- No Remote Code: The extension does not fetch or execute any remote code. All of its operational code is bundled within the extension package you download from the Chrome Web Store, which helps protect you from man-in-the-middle attacks. This is enforced by a strict Content Security Policy (CSP).
- Minimal Permissions: We only request the permissions essential for the extension to function as described.
6. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page. We recommend you review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
